The cost for a Narcotic
Detector Dog includes an extensive three week handler course. All K-9s are
pre-scented and conditioned to odor recognition prior to handler's arrival at
our site. Our Narcotic Detector Dogs are then matched up with a suitable
handler and both handler and K-9 then complete the remainder of the team's
training.
The conditioning of the Narcotic Detector Dog Team is
conducted throughout Wilmington and we condition the Narcotic Detector Dog Team
in the environments that they will have to work in when they return to duty at
their department. Also available by special order is the combination Narcotic
Detector/ Tracking Dog.
Course will include and
is not limited to:
• Training for realistic and job
applicable scenarios • Familiarity and safe handling procedures • Efficient search procedures, prioritizing, safety considerations • Maintenance/enhancement procedures • Scene evaluation and
deployment procedures • Understanding and applying operant
conditioning methodology and reward schedules • Narcotic odor
recognition, development of generalization capabilities • Conditioned
response to target odors • Handler independent alert •
Search patterns; vehicles, buildings, aircraft, ships, etc. • Record
keeping
The K9 Team will be conditioned to locate the
following: • Marijuana • Hashish •
Cocaine & Crack • Heroin • Methamphetamines
